Lincoln John::A Birth Story

It will be a long one.  Or, rather, a short one..
I accomplished two things I never thought I would get a chance to accomplish, in my life, in regards to childbirth.
1. An IV free birth.
2. To give birth with my own clothes on.  Not a scratchy hospital gown.

Also, let me premise this by saying it was not my intention to scare all the nurses in the hospital or make my husband break out in hives with all the traffic violations he committed.
Everything started on the 13th.  I had mild contractions off and on all day Sunday.  Nothing ever amounted to anything time-able nor were they intense in any way.  On Tuesday, when I went to the doctor, she commented on how hard my stomach was.  I told her I had been having contractions off and on but, again, nothing time-able.  Tuesday's contractions were more intense than Sunday but nothing that phased me.  Thursday morning rolled around and I thought maybe, just maybe, it will be D-day.  They were more intense, not long, and with more regularity.  A friend asked to take the kids so I could get a pedi so we just continued on as normal.  I picked the kids up from the park and we went out to lunch.  Eric was asking how far apart and how long and I honestly hadn't timed them or figured out how far apart they were.  The kids and I sat down to eat at 1:30 and I set my phone next to me so I could figure out how far apart they were and how long they were lasting.  They were 3 minutes apart and 30-45 seconds long.  No big deal.  I decided not to finish all my lunch because I had a naked buffalo burger and that didn't sound like it would be delicious coming back up.  I called Eric after we ate and told him what was going on.  I said I was going to take the kids on the trails and that he might want to start thinking about wrapping it up.  This was around 2:30.  I told him I would call him back when we were done walking/riding our bikes (the kids) and off we went.  We got back in the van around 4 and the second I sat down they stopped.  Not entirely but I would have 1 contraction maybe every 10-20 minutes.  Eric asked me what he needed to do and I said I think it was a false alarm, just don't be late coming home.  The kids and I played outside until Daddy got home and the whole time we were out there it was practically nothing.  Going back inside I settled down on the couch.  I was sooooo disappointed AND exhausted from being on the go all day with contractions.  Daddy was put on supper duty and I had some scrambled eggs and pretzels just in case things picked back up.
Around 6:00 I started getting them back again, every 3-5 minutes.  For the next 2.5 hours they weren't very consistent and now lasting barely 30 seconds.  After we got the kids to bed, we sat back down on the couch again.  And they stopped AGAIN.  I was debating just going to bed or taking a walk.  Figuring I would either sleep some and labor would take care of itself or I could try walking and seeing if I could get it started again.  Instead I cleaned my wax pot.  The contractions definitely got more intense and Eric was insisting they were a minute apart.  In reality, they were 2 minutes apart lasting 30-45 seconds.  This was around 9:00.  Eric was starting to be more insistent about going to the hospital.  I was insistent they still weren't long enough.  I didn't want to go in there, be only dilated to a 4/5 and confined to the blasted bed.  I knew I was GBS+ so they would want the IV in and they would want to monitor the baby for a bit.  I appeased him by saying I would call my mom, I was going to take a shower and then we could talk about going.  I called her at 10 and, while talking, she said you need to go.  She said she was going to gather up her things and come over.  I said that would be fine but I was still going to take a shower and not leave right away.  We hung up and the contractions were becoming super intense.  I was starting to feel some pressure and I said to Eric we need to call her back and tell her to hurry.  I'm not showering.  So we called her and she had just left...but was hurrying :)  Eric offered to call his dad and I said that might be a good idea.  I also had Eric call the Birth Center and tell them we where on our way.  They insisted we call the on-call doctor first.  I told him to tell her we were coming.  End of story.  We got in the van and pulled out of the driveway as Eric's dad pulled in.  We literally rolled down the window and said "Gotta go." as we rolled on by.  I had just finished a contraction and told Eric to floor it because everyone knows your contractions instantly become horrendous in the car.  I was also quickly losing control over my pain.  He took off and ran the stop sign at the end of our road.  I started contracting again by McDonalds and informed him he better just run the red light at 7/11.  He told me cars were coming.  There light turned red.  Ours turned green.  Thank you Jesus.  Off we went and Eric was firmly told to blow the next light.  I said he better not even slow down.  He didn't.  And was convinced the person coming towards him was a cop.  I said I didn't care.  As we pulled into the turn lane for the hospital my mom passed us, going to our house.  We pulled into the ER at 10:30 and I was telling Eric I had to push.  He said you better not.  With some intense breathing and serious concentration I made it through.  I told him that they were going to try to stop us at the ER and register us and place me in a wheel chair.  I told him to get his walking shoes on because I was going straight past.  I said to the security guard as we walked by "I'm going straight up." and kept on going.  Eric slowed down to talk and I said you better come push the elevator button or we are having a baby in the lobby.  Inside the elevator another contraction hit me hard and I kept telling Eric I had to push.  I'm pretty sure he grew half a head of gray hair during this...  On the third floor, I said to the nurse, we need a room.  NOW.  Inside the room, I started pacing.  Turns out it was the poor unit clerk to whom I was speaking and not a nurse.  The nurse came in a minute later and said "Have you ever had a NST?  Here put this sock on so we can monitor your contractions."  I said "No and I have to push."  She said "No you don't.  Breathe through it and put the sock on."  I get the sock on and climb into bed.  And I literally had to start pushing.  She checks me and says "You are an 8/9, you can't push yet because you aren't fully dilated."  I said "Well I'm pushing."  I literally started pushing right then and there.  The doc comes over the intercom, the nurse is yelling "She's a 9 and she's pushing, you better get in here!"  Turns out she was delivering a lady next door, a poor first time mom, and the doc had to run out of the room.  My water broke with my first or second push, before the doc got in.  It was not clear so I was slightly panicky about it but was quickly informed it was "only slightly meconium stained."  I leave it alone and continue pushing.  At this point, the nurse who was telling me not to push and tried to get me to do an NST, came back in the room and said 'I'm leaving, it's the end of my shift.  See you tomorrow night."  Good riddance.  The doc comes in as the baby was crowning.  She said on the next push I want you to push his head out.  That was one big head.
At 10:43 (13 minutes after arriving in the ER) I had to push his body out-also a first for me, I've never had to push the body out before.  The nurse told me later it was because he never turned.  And the fact that his chest was the same size as his head.  They laid him on my chest and the doc said something about "him" and I was like "what?! it's a boy?!"  And I had to lift his little leg to check.  Sure enough.  He looked big, but not as big as I thought, because he was so long.
IMG_20140717_225227
The doc stood up for a second while we waited for the placenta and said "Hi! I'm Dr. DeWitt.  What's your name?"  We all laughed.  After everything was birthed she wanted to place one stitch and wanted to know if I wanted numbing meds or not.  I was hemming and hawing and she said "You need to decide because the lady next door has her placenta just hanging out."  Oh.  OK.  Just put it in.  Then I asked Dr. DeWitt if I could leave.  Everyone started talking, at once, about the fact that I was GBS+ and there was no way a Ped was going to let him go before 24 hours and they needed blood work on him blah, blah, blah.  They said I would probably have to stay until Saturday morning.  My sweet nurse, who was left with clean up on aisle 4 ev.every.where. AND still had to admit me, was amazing.  She didn't take him away from me for a second, except for when I asked what he weighed and how long he was, before I nursed him.  She put him on the scale and Eric was like "Ooohh you were right.  He's huge.  9lb1oz."  Mini moose.
IMG_20140717_225917
She measured him and had to drop the end of his little bed because once she stretched his legs out they were over the edge.  I nursed him for over an hour and he ate like the 9lb champ he is.  His initial blood work came back fine and now we just had to wait for the 24 hour culture to come back and we could leave.  He started eating every 3 hours at 10am and hasn't looked back {yet}.  Saturday morning dawned bright and beautiful with normal bloodwork and we sprung that joint.

We literally have 4 cell phone pictures from his actual birth because we had left everything in the van when we stopped at the ER.

The first picture I texted my Mom and sister.  He looks gigantic.

^^Final picture we have of his birth.

We busted out the big camera when the big kids came to the hospital.  They were soooooo excited to meet their new baby brother.  Joelle was the most uncontainable excited.  She was so mad when she had to give him up and I'm pretty sure my mom held him for precisely 2 minutes while she was at the hospital.

bUmPdate::40 weeks

{Hopefully} this pregnancy is coming to an end.  I haven't been horridly uncomfortable but I am so ready to meet this little person.  I am sick of being huge.  Moving from sitting/laying to standing IS uncomfortable.  Sleeping is pretty uncomfortable.  I found myself wanting to feel hiccups one more time over the past week.  I've been rewarded with a few days of hiccups at different times:)  Still somewhat surreal this will be our last time having a baby.  It's a bittersweet feeling.  Really hoping to go into labor on my own some...time...soon...
014
Highlights::
How far along:: 40 weeks, measuring at 39.  Dilated to a 2.5, 50% effaced, bulging bag of water.  Maybe my water will break on it's own this time?!  That's never happened to me.
Heartbeat:: 140's
Clothes:: I am running out of options.  I'm back to dresses because my belly hangs out of my shirts.
Weight Gain:: 32lbs-it's true.  I haven't gained weight in a while.  I lost weight at the doctor.
Movement::  Definitely.
Symptoms:: Tired.  Still have the rash.  Still tired.
What I miss: Bending over.  Riding a bicycle.  Running.
Cravings:: Ice Cream.  Fruit.
Best moments this week::  Full-term.  Any time child of mine.

What I am looking forward to:: Having a baby..?
Names:: 2 boy names, 1 girl name.
Funny Moments:: Adelyn keeps coming up with names for the baby.  She said to me "How about ... for a girl?"  And I had to say sure because it's so close to the girl name.  She's still thinking about the boy name.

We ran a bunch of errands today and one included Costco.  The Vitamix lady was trying to convince me to buy the $600 Vitamix and the kids were soaking up the samples.  Normally we say no to liquids.  Too messy.  We were there right when they opened so it wasn't busy...so I felt free to stand at the table.  She said "When are you due?"  "Today."  "No way!  You are so small!" This is why I shop at Costco not Walmart.  Costco they want you to come back and tell you you are tiny.  Walmart they tell you you are fat.

Adelyn told me she had a dream about our baby last night.  She said it was a boy and it was a nice dream.

Nobody realized they were going to Papa and Nana's while I'm in the hospital.  We were talking about it the other night and they were all horrified and stared at me in disbelief.  They couldn't believe they couldn't come with ;)

Whenever I have any skin showing, my back or my belly, Adelyn will come up to me and yank on my shirt or try to pull my pants up.  Cracks me up every time.

Carrying slightly higher and slightly bigger...but not too different?!

I’m still here.

And,very sadly, still pregnant.
 Last week I pretty much boycotted cooking.  We went out to eat one night, had leftovers one night, I grilled steak another, ordered pizza another.  I did make a nice ham dinner last night.  I threw my potatoes and ham in the same pot.  Dinner.  We are having the leftovers from that tonight.

I even boycotted breakfast, last week Thursday.  See?!  Ask me what I eat at Panera?  A bowl of oats.  Quite literally the only thing I can eat on the menu.  Besides coffee.
IMG_20140710_094427

After that we went to the library and got to meet Curious George.  Some friends where there and we all went to a park afterwards.
IMG_20140710_103744

Thursday afternoon we headed out to Wells to pick some more cherries.  We had already eaten all of the cherries we picked the previous Saturday.  The kids didn't want to stop picking so we ended up with 38 pounds.  Oh my.  I pitted and froze a TON.
IMG_20140710_165636

Proof that I went ;)
IMG_20140710_165802(1)

Friday morning we headed out to the zoo with Tiff and Shelby and kids.  {One would think with all this walking and physical exertion I would deliver a baby}  We had a great time at the zoo and munching on lunch afterwards.

0140711_123116

After naps, we had to pick up Daddy's bike from the bike shop.  When I told the kids we were doing that, they requested a walk downtown.  Somehow that turned into cookies...and a large coffee for me ;)
IMG_20140711_163228

Saturday morning my mom took the kids for a couple hours and Eric and I were going to go walk on some trails.  Commence the all day rain.  So we picked some stuff up around the house and lazed around all day.  Helpful for getting a baby out..

Sunday we headed to church in the morning and then took the kids to the trails we were going to walk on, on Saturday.  We found lots of fun things for the kids.  Crickets that the kids adored catching, dragonflies, a mini-waterfall from all the rain, we sent sticks floating down the river, a cool over look and wild raspberries.
Daddy and Mommy selfie.
IMG_20140713_173233

The kids wanted a picture...with Daddy ;)  It was a beautiful day...with no baby birthing.
IMG_20140713_173313

My chiro couldn't believe I walked in the doors today.  I told her she didn't want to know how many miles I've walked over the past week.  And neither do I.  I think my body has forgotten how to go into labor (on it's own).

bUmPdate::39 weeks

39 weeks.  Sigh.  Such a relief to make it so far.  Such a disappointment that I haven't met this little person yet.  My doc keeps giving me options for delivering and I keep stalling...  I'd like to give this little one a fair chance to make it's own appearance but my patience is running thin.  Initially she offered to induce at 39.  I was all for it, then chickened out.  I told her I wanted to wait until at least 40.  Today she said do you still want to do 40?  She said or we can wait until Tuesday and see if you have any more changes and then induce next week sometime.  I said let's do that.  We'll see.  41 is my max though.  I'm not going to be a hero and push 42.  That will result in a monster sized baby and no sanity left for this momma.  I have to keep reminding myself I was dilated to a 1 at 40 weeks with Adelyn and had her a day later.  Then there is Brecken and Joelle...I walked around at a 4 with them for 2 weeks and still had to be induced.

Highlights::
How far along:: 39 weeks, measuring 39 weeks.  No change in dilation.  I almost cried.
Heartbeat::130's
Clothes:: I am running out of options.  I'm back to dresses because my belly hangs out of my shirts.
Weight Gain:: 32lbs
Movement::  Definitely.
Symptoms:: Tired.  Doesn't help that we were literally up every hour with someone last night.
What I miss: Bending over.  Riding a bicycle.  Running.
Cravings:: Food.  Carbs.
Best moments this week::  Term.

What I am looking forward to:: Meeting this baby!  Packing some hospital bags and bags for my oldest three.  The only thing that is "ready" for the baby is literally the bed.  I have gotten nothing else out.
Names:: 2 boy names, 1 girl name.
Funny Moments:: Adelyn keeps trying to get the name out of us.  Or gives us new ones.  "How about if we name the baby Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sa Rembo Cheri Beri Ruchi Pip Perry Pembo?"  Umm.  No.  I'm going to hide that book so I don't have to read it for literally the millionth time.

Eric and I were sitting in the van with three sleeping kids and giggling at the cute neighbor couple (who are the sweetest people ever).  She is due August 1st and they were out there trying to figure out how to put the infant seat in.  I said to Eric "Is it sad we haven't even gotten ours out?"  Eric said "Ahh young love.  First child syndrome."  So sweet though.  All those exciting first moments as a newbie parent....and here we are with nothing ready.  So many exciting things coming up....I should probably go pack a bag or two.

Another reason I'm so ready to deliver?  I'm sick of my children talking about me dieing.  Yesterday B was talking about the baby going to heaven and then Adelyn started talking about me dieing again.  It's exhausting.  And I have no idea where it comes from.

Adelyn's oh so accurate drawing of me::

The Monday after the 4th…

Our 4th of July weekend was filled with lots and lots of fun.  Today?  We are recovering.  We went for a walk this morning and Brecken and Joelle cried the whole way back.  So for about a mile and a half.  While they rode their bikes.  "My knees hurt."  "My legs hurt."  "It's hoooooooooooot."  "My nose is bloody." (It actually was.)  "Can we have pancakes for lunch?"  They were great before our walk and we read books on the couch after, but during?  Not so much.  They are all snoring now.

We started our our weekend with Street Performers on Thursday night.  Also known as the night we almost died.  As a family.  We went out to eat before and then headed downtown.  The kids thought this mime was hilarious.  Joelle wasn't too thrilled he singled her out for a demonstration ;)  She warmed up when they started running around.
IMG_20140703_190147
 After the demonstration we wandered down the rest of 8th street.  We made it to Peachwave and decided to get some frozen yogurt.  Because that's what you do when you walk past fro-yo.  You stop in and get some.  We were calmly eating our ice cream on the curb outside, right across from the statues, when we start hearing all this banging.  I turned to look and one of the horses for the horse drawn carriages was spooked.  He was bucking up and down and going crazy.  In a crowd of people.  It looked like he was heading straight for the sidewalk (where we were sitting) but the lady managed to wrangle him down Central.  If you want to see a pregnant lady grab a toddler and move real fast just send a bucking bronco towards her.  I thought I was going to give birth.  The poor thing was hitting all kinds of parked cars when it finally broke free at 10th and Central.  Thankfully no one was hurt.  One lady close to us claimed "injured" but walked to the ambulance.  After that we went home.  And I did not give birth.

For the 4th, friends invited us over for a pool day.  We headed out at 2 and spent the afternoon swimming, eating good food and then headed to the fireworks in Overisel.  They were the best fireworks we have ever seen.  Although they were too long...1 hour of continuous fireworks.
Pretty girls and their momma.
IMG_20140704_220843

Joelle wanted to make a silly face.  Eric told us we were something special.
IMG_20140704_220937

This is how close we were.  Amazing.
IMG_20140704_222238

How Joelle felt about the fireworks being so long...
We didn't get back until midnight.  The kids all fell asleep on the way home.
IMG_20140704_230500

Saturday morning the kids slept until 9:30.  We got up and made a big breakfast and headed out for opening day of sweet cherry picking.  Ummm.  Yum.  The kids loooove to go picking and this was our first time picking sweet cherries.  Adelyn picked one for her bucket and one for her mouth, Brecken did more eating than picking and Joelle picked over half a bucket because she didn't like the pits.
IMG_20140705_123935

25lbs of delicious goodness...and some crazy faces.
IMG_20140705_123940
We were late for naps (again) on Saturday afternoon, so I had to wake them up (again).  Saturday night we decided to ride our bikes to pick up some movies.  On the way there I was thinking this was no big deal.  When we were riding through downtown I could see how ridiculous I looked in the shop windows.  On the way back I was looking down and Eric asked what I was doing.  My legs were so numb I was just making sure they were still going in circles.  So that was a dumb idea.

Sunday morning everyone slept late again (3 mornings in a row!) but it was fine because we just had one service at 10.  We packed up all our beach stuff, headed to church, and then headed to the beach.  We were swimming and playing until 4.  We came home and grilled hamburgers with my parents and the kids were all asleep by 8:30.  Woouuuulllddd have been 8 but someone got out of bed, someone else had to poop etc.

I woke up early this morning to go to the chiro.  A and B slept until 7:45 and J slept until 8:30.  Hopefully a chill afternoon and evening will straighten everyone out ;)

Crazy Bounce

We went to Crazy Bounce with Kaylee, Kaleb and Keegan.  You better believe I participated.  The lady at the desk was in such disbelief she said I could go for free.  Umm.  OK.  I only took my phone so the pictures are very sub-par.  Something about kids flying down a slide and a not so fast shutter speed on your phone.

The only one I had of Adelyn-so I had to include it.

bUmPdate::38 weeks

The difference between 37 weeks and 38 weeks.  Crazy how much I dropped.  Even though it doesn't really feel like it.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to give birth to the world's longest baby....or the largest one.  I asked the doc, today, how big she thought it would be and she said that moms usually have a better guess than the doc.  I said I felt like it was going to be a whale.  She said wellll maybe not that big.  Her guess was 8lbs.  And then I cried ;)  Not really but I would prefer 7.

[012%255B3%255D.jpg]002

Highlights::
How far along:: 38 weeks, measuring 38 weeks.  Dilated to *almost* a 2 and at a negative 2 station.  Definitely an improvement from last week ;)
Heartbeat::130's
Clothes:: I can tell the baby has started dropping.  I find my belly peeking out of my shirts more and more ;)
Weight Gain:: 32lbs
Movement::  Definitely.
Symptoms:: I've developed a pregnancy rash.  Prurigo.  Imagine mosquito bites all over.  So that's awesome.  They are sticking mainly to my legs...so far.  Hopefully it stays that way.
What I miss: Clothes.  Bending over.
Cravings:: Fruit.  Cookies.  Vegetables.
Best moments this week::  Term next week.  Bam.

What I am looking forward to:: Meeting this baby!
Names:: 2 boy names, 1 girl name.
Funny Moments:: Every single morning Joelle races into our room and asks if the baby came yet.  If only it were that easy ;)
Adelyn told me she wanted to have 2 boys and 2 girls when she gets older.  Then she said all she really wants is a healthy baby.  She told me allllll about how she is SO excited to help with our baby and a dog.  I said maybe we can do a baby first.  She said that's a good idea.  Maybe we will get a dog when I am a bit older.  Like when I turn 16.  I said sounds great.  She is such a sweet girl.

 I found this list of things that say boy or girl so I highlighted ones that were applicable and crossed out ones that weren't....and took out ones that were inappropriate.

 You're more likely to be carrying a boy if...

  • Your baby's heartbeat is lower than 140 beats per minute.
  • You're carrying all out front.
  • You're carrying low.
  • You're blooming in pregnancy.
  • You didn't suffer from morning sickness in your first trimester.
  • You look at yourself in the mirror for at least a minute and your pupils dilate.
  • You crave salty food or protein, such as cheese and meat.
  • Your skin becomes dry.
  • You combine your age at the time of conception with the number of the month you conceived and the resulting number is even.
  • Your hair has become more full-bodied and shiny during pregnancy.
  • The hair on your legs has been growing faster during pregnancy.
  • You are more prone to headaches.
  • Your pillow faces north when you sleep.
  • You're asked to show your hands and you present them palms down.
  • You lie on your left side when sleeping.
  • Your urine is bright yellow.
  • You eat a clove of garlic and the smell seeps out of your pores.
  • Your previous child's first word was "dada".
  • In ultrasound pictures, you notice that your baby has a sloping forehead and a squared lower jaw. This is called skull theory, and many mums swear by it!

You're more likely to be having a girl if...

  • Your baby's heartbeat is faster than 140 beats per minute.
  • You're carrying all round.
  • You're carrying high.
  • You've missed the "blooming" period altogether.
  • You suffered morning sickness during your first 12 weeks-does gluten sickness count??
  • You look at yourself in the mirror for at least a minute, but your pupils don't dilate.
  • You crave sweet things, such as juice, fruit and sweets.
  • Your skin is soft.
  • You are more moody than usual.
  • You're asked to show your hands and you present them palms up.
  • You eat a clove of garlic, but you don't smell of it.
  • You combine your age at the time of conception with the number of the month you conceived and the resulting number is odd.
  • Your hair has become thinner and dull during pregnancy.
  • You lie on your right side when sleeping.
  • Your pillow faces south when you sleep.
  • Your urine is dull yellow.
  • Your previous child's first word was "mama".
  • In ultrasound pictures, your baby's lower jaw is rounded and the top of the head is tapered. This is called skull theory, and some mums believe it's very accurate.
Also, the Chinese calendar says boy.  5 of the above for boy, 7 for girl.  Again, who knows ;);)
